The puppy or the adult?

Retired adults are great and can fit into a new home environment.   Suitable for people who work full time or long hours.  These dogs have contributed to a breeding program and when ready to retire they deserve to be living on the couch getting that one on one attention.  If you are interested in an adult please let us know and we can point you to breeders who may have them available.   Here at Trahern we give you 2 week trials with any adult dog so that you are sure that dog is going to fit into your lifestyle and the new home.  If things don't work out you simply return them.  Most adults leave us for the cost of desexing.

Information on puppies is listed further below.  Please note nearly all of our puppies are sold as family pets on the LIMITED register.

From time to time we do have a puppy that we feel is a bit more special to us and might have qualities and virtues that we feel are important to our future breeding program.    We offer breeders terms on those particular pups we still want access to.  That way you end up with a loved family member who can still contribute to the future of the Bull Terrier breed.  If you don't want to do that then we suggest you wait for a puppy that is being sold outright (limited register).

What we want to know when you contact us

1.    Have you owned a Bull Terrier before?

2.   What colour and sex are you after

3.   What state and country are you from

4.   Do you intend on breeding or showing or is the dog just a pet.

5.   What other dogs do you currently own and their sex and breed

6.   Please provide your telephone contact information.

7.   We would like for you to contact us using a legitimate email ie not a hotmail or yahoo one.

We want to make sure we match the right dog to the family.

PUPPIES PURCHASED WITHIN AUSTRALIA

Within Australia your 8 week old puppy will have:

  • a 3 generation Dogs SA Limited Registration pedigree

  • its first C3 vaccination

  • be wormed

  • be microchiped.

  • Folder - breed information

  • be sold as a PET ONLY

if you wish to show or breed the dog must be co-owned on paperwork.  We will NOT guarantee that the 8 week old puppy will become a show prospect.

Currently average prices across Australia range from $900 to $1500 for an 8 week old puppy.  If you feel your happier buying a cheaper puppy from a backyard breeder then read our article and make that decision again.

The cost of a puppy might seem like a lot to some people due to seeing adverts in the paper for less.  We have set up a page specifically to help you understand why our puppies cost more and why a back yard breeders cost less.  Lets put it this way say you pay $1200 for a pedigree puppy, okay lets divide that by the average of ten years a bully lives.  That means your dog cost you $120 a year in purchase.  Buy from a backyard breeder - pay $600 - $800(for a dog that doesn't have papers and your taking their word its really a Bull Terrier)  that dog costs you $60 - $80 a year and to make matters worse you only have their word that its pure, no papers, no nothing to tell you that your dog is a "Real McCoy".  So when you look at it like that breeders then don't charge the earth, its backyarders who are charging high prices for impostors.  In all honesty its no different to going to the RSPCA and taking a gamble on what they've got for sale for less. The only difference is a backyard breeder can claim their puppies have been vet checked and there is NO evidence for this yet at the RSPCA you are guaranteed their vets have really checked all animals on the premises and all their animas are vaccinated.  Unless the backyarder can provide, vet certificate to prove its been vet checked and the original pedigree papers for the parents for you to sight DON'T BELIEVE IT.  Just our opinion.

We've had to say this cause we've heard MANY complaints from buyers of these dubious so called purebred who have regrets and are stuck with a mongrel for the next ten years instead of paying a bit more.  They thought they were getting the same deal and saving some money.  That is why you need to do your homework a bit more.  Save up for your dog and buy it when you have the funds.  Sometimes people say to us but I cannot afford to pay that for a dog, then sorry to say you might not be able to afford the vet bills either.  So perhaps think twice about buying a dog for that time being.

We wont deny dog ownership is becoming very expensive with vet bills, feed bills etc and thats without the purchase cost.

PUPPIES PURCHASED FOR EXPORT

We will export but only to approved homes and countries.  P.O.A. for cost of an export puppy.  All export puppies must be kept here till they are a minimum of 12 weeks of age (Dogs SA ruling).  If your country requires Rabies vaccination or blood works these costs are to be absorbed by you.

People contact us because they are after the Real McCoy - a Bull Terrier who is a Bull Terrier.

Main and Registered Pedigree information.

If you live interstate transport must be organized and the cost of transporting the puppy is your responsibility.  On average the cost is anything up to $500 extra (depending on destination) and possibly more with recent airline changes beyond anyones control.  So be aware of that, and puppies within Australia can only leave at the 8 week of age bracket.  We can help out with information on dog transporters.

DNA TESTING - In 2009 the CC's are looking at making dna testing compulsory.  Sure this is going to be another added expense for hobby breeders.  This ruling will only affect those who have been unethical with their kennel management.  There has been a case of white to white producing a coloured,,,,,that was not a miracle but a visitor.  In other words another dog mated that bitch.  For example white to white will only produce WHITE and if a coloured is produced it should not be bred from.  DNA test the whole litter cause there has 100% been a visitor.   If you struggle with that just think of mixing white paint to white paint you will only ever get white paint irrespective of colours of grandparents.  Food for thought.  Also a solid coloured parent will not produce a white as they are genetically homozygous.

The other beauty of DNA testing is we re now allowed to mate 2 sires to a dam, the DNA testing will reveal who the sire is for each puppy and the pedigrees will be registered correctly thanks to DNA.  Sure a costly exercise to the breeder but DNA testing will now give the breeder the freedom to do these matings and keep the pedigrees TRUE and CORRECT

We personally feel that the breeders should get together through their clubs and National Bull Terrier Council and put together a breeders information package for any new breeder.  As we are getting alot of new comers into the breed and they have no proper knowledge and support on breeding dogs etc and what colours our breed should or should not produce.  Knowledge is power.  We want them to be taught about proper kennel management.  We want those puppies out there running around to be who they're supposedly from.  Cause we will get pet people wanting to breed on again with their pedigree Bull Terrier and we do not want a false pedigrees in our bloodlines.

There is also a new BITSER test - so if you think your Bull Terrier is not really pure you can now do this test to confirm your suspicions for a small cost.
